Exhibit: Diversity in my Dental Class
Benchmark: Individuality
Skills: Willingness and ability to relate to many different people
Having an understanding of other cultures is a very important attribute of a healthcare worker. Throughout the day you see many diverse patients. Not every patient will look the same as you, talk the same as you, or most importantly, have the same views as you. Being able to positively communicate with your patients is essential. I feel that my communication skills are quite strong because I am able to communicate effectively with fellow peers in my dental class, which greatly reduces communication barriers.
I since I was young was referred to as an “old soul.” I believe I have been labeled this because I can easily communicate, even as a young child, with adults whether they are thirty or they’re sixty I am still able to make conversation. This is important, especially in a dental office, because when a patient comes in for an appointment they are already nervous and having conversation tends to distract them.
In my dental class although there are people from other cultures, I can still communicate with them just as well as any other classmate. It is being able to carry on a conversation with a complete stranger because you may not always know the patient you are working on.
I am able to break communication barriers because I am a sociable person and I find having conversation with many different people comes with ease. Being a dentist, it is important to know my patients and to be able form a relationship with them.
