What is Asepsis?

Asepsis is the state of being free from disease-causing microorganisms. Asepsis often refers to the steps taken to prevent the spread of infection. In healthcare, it is a critical step of creating an infection free treatment room. Before learning chairside procedures, my first step on preventing the spread of infection was learning about the chain of infection. The transmission of infection depends on six links in order for infection to spread and manipulate the body or surface. The six links include an infectious agent (pathogen, bacteria, and viruses), reservoir (where the infection grows and reproduces), portal of exit (the primary way of exiting the body, ex. Mouth, mucous membranes.) Transmission is categorized as direct contact (kissing, intercourse), indirect (droplet contact such as water glasses, hands, clothes, and air movement), or through vectors such as ticks, bats, or mosquitoes. The last two chains are portal of entry which is often the same as the portal of exit, and lastly a host where the infection spreads. In my dental class, we learned of ways to prevent this spread of infection. If one chain is broken, the infection is not transmissible. Ways we prevent the spread of infection are by disinfecting the dental units after each person, using an ultrasonic and an autoclave, but most importantly we wear our personal protection equipment.
