Skill: P102- Demonstrate safety and self control requiring minimum direction and supervision

Part of becoming an adult and being accepted as one is being responsible enough to be on your own without parental supervision. During my early teenage years I wanted a job, but I was still too young to have a job and to have a car to get to that job. When you’re in this awkward stage of wanting to work and not having the means to be able to, you often end up doing odd end jobs to make money for the things you desire such as a car, clothes, spending money, etc. This part of your teenage years is hard, but with determination and hard work you can still earn money without being of age. During this time in my life, the very first job I ever had was babysitting a four year old little boy, Lawson for my neighbors Kent and Angie Tyler. This was a very simple, fun first job to have and it worked out for quite a while until I became employed at the Beach Bar.

I started watching Lawson roughly in 2013. I got this job because my sister used to watch him when he was a baby and when my sister got older; the job was passed down to me. I watched Lawson for an accumulative two years. We had lots of fun together and I considered him a little brother due to the fact that they are close family friends. In 2007, my house burnt down and Kent and Angie had recently moved into the house at the end of our road. Throughout the tough times of the next few years for my family, Kent and Angie were there for us. During Christmas of that year they took my sisters and I to Ann Arbor and they took us shopping and spent a thousand dollars on each of us. This was highly appreciated due to the fact that all of our clothes had been burned in the fire. Kent and Angie often would go out and have me come over and watch Lawson. I made a lot of money doing this because they would go out every weekend and I would watch him sometimes every Friday and Saturday making $100 a night, which was very nice at my age then.

Part of being a regular babysitter is that the parents want to feel that they can trust you and that you can take care of their child and they can be at ease when they are gone. This is exactly what I did. Not only does Lawson love his “Abbey Sharp” but Kent and Angie knew they could trust me with their kid and their house so they allowed me to watch Lawson multiple times a week, sometimes overnight or until very early in the morning. This is part of being a good babysitter; having someone to count on that you can trust. Through this opportunity, Angie would often recommend me to her family members and also her friends. This gave me even more opportunity to make money which I appreciated.

Being able to prove to your employer that you are capable of your duties is an important part of a job. Being a dentist, you are the boss of the business so it is very important that you fulfill this leadership role and you can demonstrate safety. During my college years, I have to show that I can be this leader in my career and I will be able to practice this role during my clinicals.
