   I Am…

My name is Abigail Sharp. I am the daughter of Dawn and Gabe Sharp. I was born August 7th, 1998 at Foote Hospital, which is now known as Allegiance Health. I have two older sisters Ashley, twenty-four, and Sam twenty-two. I have one nephew, Liam, Ashley’s son. And I also have a boyfriend, Cory May, twenty. I am seventeen and currently a senior at Hanover-Horton High school. After high school I plan to get my prerequisite classes finished and I may possibly study biology at the University of Michigan in Dearborn and then eventually transfer to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to study dentistry. As a kid I never thought I would want to stick my hands into peoples mouths for a living, but as I have grown I’ve developed an interest in dentistry.

Going to my scheduled dental appointments twice a year became something I was excited about. Most people dread going to the dentist, but for me it is always a learning experience. Being a Dental Occupations student has only made my interest grow. Becoming a dentist isn’t something that happens overnight, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to go to school for a decade, but I am up for the challenge because I have faith in myself and in my dream. I believe something becomes a dream when an idea is born in your mind and you have a genuine interest and passion in that idea. For me, going to school in order to achieve something of which will be a milestone in my life is a path I will always follow.

Being a dentist takes a special kind of person. Someone who can be a leader for the public and fellow healthcare professionals, someone who can put others before themselves, someone who can be easy going and a listener and also someone who can stay organized and multitask. During my investigation of my personality type, I noted many attributes that create a good dental professional are many characteristics of which I possess. In my studies, I have discovered that I am an ENFJ. ENFJ stands for extravert, intuitive, feelings and judging. I am a very charismatic, influential, trustworthy, and very enthusiastic. I felt as if this personality test was very accurate because not only did I feel like this described my positive personality well, but it also described my weaknesses in my personality. My strengths outweigh my weaknesses because I will always be the person that I am and accept that. I use things that may not be considered a positive, and I use them to my advantage. I often speak my mind; this can be viewed as not a good thing because I often become comfortable with people very fast. I am very compassionate and understanding of others and I tend to feel closely connected with people whom I may not necessarily have common interest with. I also am a very intuitive person, I can judge someone by his or her character from the first time I meet them. I would consider this a positive to my personality because I can tell what type of person they truly are.

I am someone who has the personality to work in health care because I am a people person. I enjoy conversation and I take a genuine interest in what a person has to say to me. In not only dentistry, but any other professional career people enjoy working with someone who they can feel not only comfortable with but someone who they can trust. “Abbey is the most easy going and trustworthy person I’ve ever met, she is very outgoing and easy to talk to and brings a smile to everyone’s face that she encounters and she always listens to what you have to say.” – Cory May.

I am personally very proud of my grades and academic achievements I have made in my dental class. I have achieved an A in my class and also have participated in HOSA, which is the Health Occupations Students of America. In HOSA I studied dental terminology and succeeded in getting on stage for 5th place in a competition. I am proud of this because HOSA is not a required study in my dental class and I was one of the few who participated and succeeded in these studies. I have always had an interest in health. I workout regularly and I played volleyball for five years. Being a part of extracurricular activities creates someone with a good worth ethic because being a part of a sport shows you can multitask and also it shows that you are dedicated to extra activities you involve yourself in.

Every person has unique qualities about themselves. I believe my personal qualities will help me excel in my future endeavors. You are born with a passion, of which you must follow in your life in order to succeed. No person is perfect, but I believe if you follow your passion it can only do but one thing, lead you to greatness.
