Exhibit: Use of Working Instrumentation in my Dental Class

Benchmark: Individuality

Skill: Ability to Use Dental Equipment

Part of being in healthcare is knowing your career’s working instrumentation. In dentistry, there are many different types of drills, dental burs, and also instruments that are involved to conduct a procedure. The role of the dental assistant is to know the instruments and the procedure so your assistance creates a smooth transition of dental tools; this technique is referred to as four-handed dentistry. This concept requires a great deal of concentration and also organization. The role of the dentist is to be able to manipulate instruments and also materials such as composite or amalgam material to create a flawless final product that your patient will be pleased with. I am confident with my training that I am going to be successful in dental school and I am confident that my skill level will be quite advanced after dental school.

Being a second year student in my dental class I have learned how to use many different types of instruments, drills, suction techniques, and dental burs. Along with additional technical equipment, I have learned several procedures such as sealants, extractions, also amalgam and composite procedures. Along with these procedures I have learned the tray set-ups. Different procedures require many different types of instruments but a constant in these trays is the mouth mirror, explorer, cotton pliers, articulating paper holder, HVE (high-velocity evacuator), and the air-water syringe tip. These materials are needed in nearly every procedure.

I have a good base knowledge of dental materials, instruments, procedures and also how to conduct these procedures as a dentist and also an assistant. This gives me an advantage in my future career because having prior knowledge will only put me farther ahead in my program versus people who are going into dentistry without having knowledge of common dental practices and procedures. I also have not only been taught dental related subjects I have had training to be a general healthcare worker so I have a good understanding of how a healthcare facility runs and I have OSHA, CPR, and HOSA training and my ethics have also evolved due to my knowledge of the industry. All of these factors give me the competitive advantage in my highly sought after career.
