Exhibit:  Second Year of Dental

Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication

Skills: TC109- Help other team members accomplish their tasks

Teamwork in a career is a very important factor in being a productive team. In healthcare, especially, teamwork keeps everything running smoothly and effectively. My dental class consists of four second years and fifteen first years. This creates a divide in our class and the second years are outnumbered. It is important for us to work together as a team to accomplish assignments, skills and it is our responsibility to be role models to the first year students. As this role model figure, I often help first years with assignments and skills and I give them pointers for being successful in the class.

In one of the first year skills, second years are required, in order to get a signature from my teacher, to help a first year through the Asepsis skill. This skill involves aseptic techniques such as wearing proper PPE’s while cleaning and disinfecting the treatment room, removing barriers and bringing the tray and instruments over to the sterilization center. It is important I help the first years through this skill because there are many steps in this procedure to disinfect and sterilize instruments and the treatment room to prevent the spread of infection.

I helped the first years throughout many of their skills such as hand washing, asepsis and other assignments such as their DHO’s, which is their assigned bookwork.

Teamwork is an important part of a dental office also because everyone must work together to do laundry, treat patients, clean treatment rooms and many other tasks of the dental office. Teamwork also will come into play when I am in college because you often do group projects in college and when I am doing my clinical it is important to be able to work in a team effectively, as I will be in a dental office. A dental office must work together in order to provide patients with the best possible care. The dentist, dental assistant, and hygienist must communicate and keep each other informed so everyone is on the same page.
