Exhibit: Brittany Maynard/ Timeline
Benchmark 3: Academic
Skills: Government
Government classes are beneficial to students because in order to understand how our government works and how our country was founded is important because as citizens we should know the incredible triumphant history of the United States. It also is important to understand our governmental structure because in order to know how laws work you must understand how laws and bills are processed through the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Executive branch. There are many controversial issues within our governmental structure. Most of these issues come down to different ethical views. In the case of Brittany Maynard, I was required to give my opinion on her case. I had to determine my own ethical views. I also created a timeline in my government class hat demonstrates important dates and times.
In her case, the ethical aspect of it was the debate. Brittany was young and suffering from brain cancer. She in order to be happier and out of pain wanted to end her life peacefully through lethal injection. A lot of people disagree with this because they believe a person should die of natural causes and lethal injection for the objectors is viewed as unethical. Issues with lethal injection have always been present. The most famous case of physician assisted suicide was the case of Dr. Kevorkian, he was found guilty for committing physician assisted suicide in Michigan. Dr. Kevorkian assisted patients that were dying of disease and cancer. The piece of work was chosen because I believe physician assisted suicide should be legal. I have this view because of watching my grandmother and other family members suffer until they passed. I would’ve liked to see her not in pain because I saw the pain she went through, sometimes in peer agony. I believe if you have a terminal illness and you only have a few months left on earth you should be able to make that choice
Social studies has always been a class I’ve enjoyed. Many people struggle with this subject because not everyone can learn important names, dates, and events without the information going into their short-term memory. I have always enjoyed history and these historical events fascinate me. I am also good at remembering dates and names. For example, I remember that in 1803 Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana from France for 15 million dollars. I remember this from my freshman year of Later American Studies because I found this interesting that a whole state was bought for 15 million dollars. It is important to be able to remember dates and events. In this assignment I was required to create of a time line of different events and I also had to explain whether the event was an example of realism or idealism.
Having established ethical views is important in my college career because in my career as a dentist I will be posed with many situations that rely on ethics and during college while going through school my ethical views will develop even more. Being able to remember important dates will help me as a young adult in college because while I am studying I can retain information well. In dentistry this will help me because I need to be able to remember how to conduct several procedures and also it is important I remember appointments and patients names.
