“The English language is nobody’s special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself.” English has always been a class that I enjoyed. I am someone who enjoys reading and I believe reading expands your vocabulary, boost your creativity, improves your writing abilities, enhances your memory, develops your analytical thinking, and it improves your overall academic abilities. During my years in high school, I have taken all of my common core English classes along with Mythology and I also receive English credits in my Dental Occupations class. In my mythology class, I created a social network page for the goddess Iris, a messenger for Zeus. In my sophomore class of English, I read one of my favorite novels, To Kill a Mockingbird. I was highly interested in this book because of its historical substance.
In my sophomore English class we read several novels but among these books the one that is most distinct in my head is To Kill a Mockingbird. I enjoyed this book because of the back-story and also the way the book was written was interesting. I enjoy books that have historical prevalence because I enjoy history and learning about events that have happened in the past such as the Great Depression. Learning and understanding our history, as a civilization is quite important because in order for us to move forward and advance we must be able to accept and correct our faults we have made in the past. Due to my interest in this book I was able to receive full credit on my pop quiz. Among many quizzes that came with To Kill a Mockingbird, this particular one includes a summary of four chapters. In order for my teacher to know who had and hadn’t done the reading assigned for the previous days we were required to be able to identify and place the names of different characters on the appropriate lines.
Having a background of elective English classes shows that you are able to take your English skills and exercise them to another subject with similar goals. I chose mythology as an elective class I enjoy reading and learning about subjects that I do not have prior knowledge of because I enjoy learning new things. It also was interesting to me because people believed in these stories therefore it is a part of history. I am happy I took this class even though it was challenging because I like to read fiction and I was up to test my English abilities. In this social network assignment I was required to pick a God or Goddess to create a Social network site for Iris, a messenger goddess. I chose this assignment because I thought it was creative how my teacher took old Greek and Roman history and created an assignment that would relate to today’s world.
This quiz an important exhibit of my ability to be able to complete deadlines, and also this shows that I am able to not only read for enjoyment and information, but I am able to retain and summarize the main idea of a chapter or passage. This ability will help me as a young adult in college because not all people have developed reading and writing skills. Being able to read at an advance medical level in college is a privilege. Medical terminology is a language in itself making my reading and writing skills an advantage to the success in my career. Being a dentist, an analytical mind is an advantage because you cannot only analysis information, but also retain the information, manipulate it and be able to apply your knowledge. Communication is important in the job role in dentistry, which makes an English background important. English will allow me to succeed in my career and I feel confident in this skill.Taking this class has better prepared me for college because of my versatility in English, I will succeed in my difficult classes.
